Landed a big steelhead last year up in British Columbia on the Bulkley River (sorry had not option for listing the locationhence why Utah is wrong). Caught it swinging a 6-inch black and blue intruder on a sink tip, classic setup but this one hit hard. Took me straight into the backing within seconds and ran me about 150 yards downstream before I could even think about turning it. Took a solid 20 minutes to bring in, with a couple of those heart-stopping jumps mid-fight. Easily the biggest of the trip, pushing the high teens in pounds. This was mid-October, right in the heart of the Bulkley’s steelhead run when the fish are fresh and strong. I was staying at a couple of the upmarket fishing lodges up there that have exclusive access to stretches of the river, definitely made a difference having quiet water to work with. All in all, one of those fish you don’t forget.
